Advice & Recommendations
Our audiologists will complete a hearing test and assessment that may rule out or confirm why the tinnitus is present, including hearing loss, wax buildup or an ear infection. From there, we will discuss tinnitus management options on how to best manage your symptoms and find what works for you. We will suggest further intervention as necessary.
About half of people with tinnitus who use hearing aids notice some degree of relief from their tinnitus. Some hearing aids also have built-in tinnitus maskers or sound generators for added benefit and tinnitus management. If the tinnitus is a symptom of hearing loss, treating it with hearing aids will usually alleviate the symptom. Using hearing aids that are fit appropriately can also significantly improve your quality of life, reducing stress and frustration, two huge contributing factors to the intensity of tinnitus.
Sound Masking Devices
Sound masking devices are small electronic devices that play various noises to help distract your brain from the sound of your tinnitus. Most modern hearing aids have a built-in masker, while there are also tabletop masking devices and apps available. We can individually program your sound masking device or hearing aids or recommend apps to help treat your tinnitus.
We’re Happy to Answer All Your Questions
You can prevent tinnitus by avoiding loud noises or wearing custom ear plugs if you are exposed to loud noises for long periods of time; this can include concerts, industrial workplaces and certain hobbies, like recreational hunting. You should also get ear infections and excessive ear wax treated sooner rather than later, while reducing your stress and anxiety levels. We can offer you more advice and guidance when you visit us for tinnitus treatment in Toronto.
Medical causes can range from excessive earwax to complex conditions, such as otitis media (a middle ear infection) and head and neck injuries. Most commonly, tinnitus is a symptom of noise-induced hearing loss or presbycusis (age-related hearing loss).
It is recommended that if you hear sounds in your ears, intermittently or not, you should get your hearing tested. Our highly-trained audiologists will conduct a comprehensive test while reviewing your medical history and your lifestyle to evaluate and help treat your tinnitus.
