World Hearing Day 2020: This year’s theme is “Hearing for Life: don’t let hearing loss limit you”.

March 3rd is World Hearing Day! On World Hearing Day the World Health Organization (WHO) aims to promote hearing health and the timely and effective interventions for those with hearing loss. The WHO projects that rates of hearing loss are set to increase significantly around the world. As such, the team at Toronto Family Hearing would like to do our part to help raise awareness of the importance of taking charge of your hearing health!
Hearing allows you to effectively communicate and engage in the world around you. Good hearing health can improve your social inclusion, relationships, as well as your physical and mental well-being. Interventions that provide you with better hearing (e.g. hearing aids) facilitate access to education and employment and improve your overall quality of life.
When hearing loss goes untreated it can cause you to withdraw from social situations due to the embarrassment of frequent misunderstandings. This can lead to feelings of isolation and depression. Withdrawing socially and the increased listening effort required by someone with untreated hearing loss can ultimately contribute to mental decline and is linked to the onset of dementia and Alzheimer’s disease.  The longer you wait to treat your hearing loss the longer your brain is deprived of sound, which can also negatively impact the adoption of hearing aids down the road.
It all starts with a hearing test
Do you know the last time you had your hearing tested? Or maybe you’ve never had a hearing test. A hearing test only takes an hour of your time, and allows you to understand the status of your hearing health. An Audiologist can advise you on what, if any, interventions are appropriate for you.
On this World Hearing Day, do something good for your hearing health and call us to book a hearing test with one of our Audiologists.
